WordPress Floating Sidebar Plugin

by strx on November 26, 2010

If you scroll down this site, especially on long posts, you will see the right sidebar following you.

It is a plugin I’ve written, that I’ve decided to release publicly on wordpress.org site.

Download it from here

If you have a classic 2 or 3 column site with a sidebar, this plugin can increase usability for users and ads earning for you, whatch at these 2 images:

QUIZ: Where is easier to click on the Google ADS?

I choose image number 2…

This plugin is different from others because don’t use fixed positions (sidebar can be taller than content) and don’t require theme or visual changes to your blog.

I’ve recorded the plugin in action. You can configure about anything, from speed to activation delay from when the user stops scrolling. In this video you can also see that when the content is lower than sidebar, nothing happens.

The plugin is wel documented and the configuration can be made from wordpress admin area, under Settings->Strx Floating Sidebar.

There can be only one difficult thing: identify content and sidebar html selectors (id attribute of div). You can use Firebug (the inspect button) or the plugin utility to show all the ids on the footer that will change bacround-color of related div clicking on them.

To test or understand why someting is wrong, you can activate the outline and debug checks: the first will print debug info on console (Chrome, Firefox with firebug, IE8), the second will outline with a red, dotted line, the content and sidebar divs. All of this debugging features will be executed only if you are logged in to your site, so without scaring users.

Hi, cool plug in!! I have a problem with the sidebar sliding over the content. I use the plugin utility and color of content is red then I click and goes to green or blue , what am I supposed to do with these colors to keep the sidebar from sliding to the content??

by Dan on November 26, 2010 at 18:25. Reply #

The Findids utility should help you get sidebar and content ids. When you see that the right panel change color, copy the id on the plugin config page, save and see what happens. The id has to be preceded by a #

Give me your blog url, if I can I will help you.

by strx on November 26, 2010 at 18:39. Reply #

Upgrade to the 1.0.2 version

When you click on ids in the FINDIDS utility, an alert will tell you what to do.
Hope will be useful, bye.

I’m using 3-column K2 theme. Two sidebar div IDS:

If I set the plugin for #sidebar-1, I see the scrolling action but the 2nd sidebar will suddenly drop and overlap on the first one. If I set it to #sidebar-2, no scrolling action at all. So, the 3-column K2 theme doesn’t play well with the plugin. How do I get both sidebars to scroll down?

Does this plugin support 2 sidebars? I can only see one input box to specify sidebar DIV id.

by fruityoaty on November 28, 2010 at 00:31. Reply #

Try with versio 1.0.3

You can specify 2 or more sidebars in this way

Alternatively, have to modify your theme layout, wrapping sidebars in another div, like this:

And then specifying #sidebars on my plugin config.

Give us some feedback, thanks.

Hi, I’ve tested version 1.0.3 with 3-column K2 theme under WordPress 3.0.1. Well, I’m now able to input 2 sidebar IDS… however, the original problem of the “2nd” sidebar suddenly dropping down and completely over the 1st sidebar when you scroll down still exists. The 2nd sidebar just appears on top of the 1st sidebar as soon as you start to scroll down. Weird.

Yes, weird…sorry but I don’t know how to test and debug this feature…give me your admin password ;)

Hi. I’m experimenting with your plug in at http://dev3.abtestbed.com/about/

I want the left column sidebars to slide down as you scroll with the content on the right. I must have the wrong sidebar selector but I put “#column-1-page-2″ in the box. Nothing is happening. The sidebar does not move down. The sidebar has a text widget. That’s what I want to scroll down the page. the top left is leaf-39 and the bottom is leaf-41. Please tell me what I’m supposed to use. thanks very much for what looks to be a promising plug-in. -alan

Disregard my last post. It works, but is not selectable by body class. In other words using #sidebar works but using .page-id-xxx #sidebar doesn’t. I think that’s an area where you can improve it ;)

Heh, and to show what a pain in the butt I am…one last comment. It would be helpful either to 1) be able to target pages or 2) be able to exclude pages and home. Some themes don’t use a sidebar on the homepage and you get script errors when your targeted sidebar isn’t present. (same error as above)

Trying to get the sidebar to slide. Not sure what im doing wrong. i looked at the the install instructions on the plugin download page for wordpress and it says this.

“Upload the plugin to your blog, Activate it, add to the sidebar from the Widgets admin panel”

Not sure what that means. I went in and setup the plugin in my wordpress setting.

#content and #sidebar were correct from what i could tell in firebug. Ive never used this or tried this before on a site but was hoping to get a little help.

Thank you!

LOVELY plugin!

I just have a very small problem.. that can be seen here: http://shop.dearearth.net

If you notice, in the upper-right of the content area, there is a toggle button, to switch from GRID view to LIST view. When I switch to LIST view, and the content area is dynamically made longer, the sidebar only slides up until where it would normally stop if it were still in GRID view.

When I tested this script, http://www.javascript-fx.com/submitscripts/float/float.html, it worked in the sense that it would scroll all the way down. However, the script ahs other issues (disappears off screen etc) so I prefer to use yours.

Please let me know!

Hi Strx,

Thank you very much for a cool plugin. :)

However, I’m having a small problem in one part and wondering if you fix it.

I would like to set the Animate Speed and Reposition Speed to 0. That is, I would like it to seem as if the sidebar is stuck to the bottom or top of the screen flawlessly. :)

At present, when I do this with the plugin, setting both speeds to 0, the sidebar jumps slightly as you scroll down and up.

Is there any way you could fix this?

As an example, go to this page:

And look at the floating social media widget on the left. :)

It follows exactly and flawlessly as I move up or down. I would like to have this effect.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Yes. I tried setting it to both 1 and 0, and even 0.5, and it still has a slight jump when the users scrolls down or up through the screen using the keyboard.

Hi there,

Thanks for the great plug-in!

I am having one strange problem. If the sidebar is only slightly longer than the content column, the bottom of the sidebar (in my case an ad) shows until after the load delay, and then disappears under the footer.

You can see it in action here: http://www.100scifimovies.com/category/new-upcoming-releases/ — scroll to the bottom of the page and look on the right.

Thanks for any tips on fixing this!

by Jon Stout on May 18, 2011 at 04:19. Reply #

This is strange…I think it can’t determine the exact sidebar length because the ads is positioned at bottom…but I don’t know exactly why!!!
I think you can solve in 2 ways:
1) Insert the ads in a div of exactly the same ads height
2) Move your ads up by 1 position, before the BLOG ROLL for example

Let me know, thanks

by strx on May 19, 2011 at 14:31. Reply #

1) the height was already set
2) this element is actually the secondary nav, not the primary — maybe that has something to do with it…

So I’ve found I have to put “#art-main” into the content field and “.art-sidebar1″ or “.art-sidebar1″ (I have two sidebars, one on the left and one on the right) to make it work.

However, when I’m at the top of the page, the sidebars penetrate into the header section and cover the header image on my blog. When I scroll down, they float, so that’s fine, but it only causes problems when I’m scrolled to the top.

I’ve installed this plugin and appreciate it.

I have a slight problem eith it. If I put the content within square brackets, like a shortcode or an image caption, the plugin calculates the length of the page as if those content don’t exist, so the sidebar doesn’t slide even though the page is longer than the sidebar.

It is only triggered if the length of the content, which is not within square brackets, is greater than the sidebar and it works fine.

Is there any workaround to overcome this issue?

Just what I was looking for, and would love to use it, but it causes the drop down menus to disappear from the top navigation bar when I’m on pages that don’t have a floating sidebar. Or more precisely, I only get my drop down menus on the one page I’ve set up with the floating sidebar.

Any way to bring the top of the sidebar all the way down as scrolling… Seems that about 200 or 300px stay above the viewing service when scrolling down … see screenshop

I tried your plugin. It works perfectly. However, I have some full-width pages with no sidebar (i.e. no #sidebar div as well). These pages are kind of broken with JQuery errors. Is there a way I can prevent this plugin from loading on full-width pages?

Appreciate your inputs.

This plugin has me stumped. Your installation page says ” add to the sidebar from the Widgets admin panel” but I don’t see anything to add!?

by Rob on November 25, 2011 at 19:29. Reply #

It`s a nice plugin, but I installed it and it is not scrolling. Obviously because I dont know what firebug is and how to set the #content thingy. Last things I tried was enabling dynamicTop and jsInHead. Any help would be appreciated. I read the posts, but you know how it goes after you read 20 posts and tried a few things.

On all pages/posts the ID is “contentleft” but on the main page it is just “content.” Is there a way to have two variables in the content selector? I tried #contentleft,#content with no luck.

Any help given would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Can you help me with my site. i would like to use your great plugin but i can figure out why it does’t work on my site.

Also the FINDIDS and OUTLINE doesn’t work.

Hello, I was wondering how you could select multiple IDs, rather than just one. Unfortunately, my #sidebar ID does not like being touched, so I want to select two IDs instead, so only those two elements in the sidebar will move.

So far, I only know how to get one ID on there, and that’s #text-12. Now, I’m trying to get my other text widget on there, or #text-8. Apparently, “#text-8, #text-12″ makes the widgets overlap, so I was wondering how I could go about doing this.

Thanks in advance!

I love it! Thanks!!

You have a great “dynamicTop” option that’s needed if your page length change dynamically…

Do you have any solutions for the case where widget length changes dynamically?

The bottom of my widget is getting cut off when the form inside my widget grows based on what a user selects.

I LOVE this plugin but there is one really big issue for me. When I have you plugin active my wp-prettyPhoto plugin will no longer work. I would really hate to not use your plugin… is there anything you know that might allow me to use your plugin simultaneously with wp-prettyPhoto plugin?

Thanks in advance for any response/suggestions!

Hi Strx

Great plugin :) having a few problems with the floating right side bar only working the first time you scroll down the page, it follows you back up and then gets stuck at the top again and won’t move from there.

Im happy to pay for a solution or contribute please let me know :)

The site pegs are for our beta site but we would like to go live with the plugin working asap.

the positions are
#content-shift or #system

thank you :)

There seems to be a conflict between your plugin and WEBphysiology Portfolio. Any idea how to remedy it? Besides finding another portfolio plugin. :)

Great script and works perfectly on all of the other pages!

by Stacy on April 3, 2012 at 21:25. Reply #

Scratch that last comment. The only page on my site that the scrip works is our Clients page. Even on the standard pages without any plugins, it’s not working. Strange.

Any idea why it only works on the Client page?

by Stacy on April 3, 2012 at 22:57. Reply #

Nevermind…got it figured out! Works perfectly! I had the wrong ID selected for the content area.

by Stacy on April 4, 2012 at 00:28. Reply #

Your plugin is great.
But when my sidebar is bigger that content page, sibebar goes over my footer.

Can you help me out?

Hello, I like your plugin!

Is it compatible with WP Super cache?

I think it is :)

Hi there,

I got a question. I just installed your plugin and it works fine. The problem is, it is conflicting with some other plugins and my site is not correct by w3c anymore.

My main problem is that my contact form 7 is not redirecting anymore after filling in the form. When I deactivate your plugin it is.

Can you help me with this because I need both plugins…

Thanks! Mike

I am finding that in firefox when I try to make the “get a quote” widget to float it only works if I enter #left in content and then it floats to the left of the sidebar on a wide screen. I would really want to make both sidebars float.

Great plugin! I’m looking for something that can hold ad widgets; similar to the adverts at the bottom right hand side of the Facebook Timeline profile pages. Do you think this plugin of yours would be a suitable candidate with a bit of [fairly easy] coding wizardry?

I have a question about your plug in Strx floating widgets. I have used it in a website that im creating for a clients. It works exactly how I wanted it except for one problem.

Everything works fine on pages where I have both a Side Bar and Content. But on pages with no side bar the Strx floating widgets stops part of my page working.

I know this is vage but if you have any advice I would be extremely thankful

For some reason…the sidebar just won’t float. I have set the div IDs and all…I am also using Custom Sidebars…so I can have a different sidebar depending on the users page. Any help would be amazing, thank you so much in advance :)

Thanks for releasing the floating sidebar plugin. It’s great – but I have one problem with it.
It works perfectly o a normal computer screen, but my site automatically resizes when viewed on a smartphone, and as a result the footer becomes unreadable because the sidebar is overlapping it.

Is there a way for the plugin to detect an iphone/android brower and then disable itself?

by James on June 29, 2012 at 19:44. Reply #

Good question, I will add a flag on upcoming release.

by strx on July 3, 2012 at 08:25. Reply #

I have a similar problem; using this in conjunction with a responsive WP theme. The sidebar becomes misplaced/overlaps the content area when resizing the page. If there were an option to disable at certain screen sizes and/or more responsive support, this plugin would be absolutely perfect!

Hello, great! It works really well. Only on a site does not work well. Can you tell me what parameters to enter? Here’s the page:
Thanks, Tina

Incredibly frustrating process going through all the content / sidebar combo’s. Switching on and off jsInHead and randomly adjusting height offset BUT works a peach when you eventually get there. FINDIDS and OUTLINES are natty little tools and make narrowing things down a lot easier and is actually much clearer to use than Firebug. Some clearer instructions as to what needs to be added to the content and sidebar sections would be useful but Good work! Thank you.

I’m a big fan and heavy user of your floating sidebar plugin! I would like to make a suggestion, though: can you add an option to not animate the scrolling at all, but just keep the sidebars still while the content scrolls?

In my website http://slices-of-life.com, I’m almost achieving this by setting the animate speed to 999999999 and the wait to 0. But it still flickers just a little bit while scrolling down, and would be great if there was a way around this. Can you help, please?

ps – neat password-based comment spam protection you’ve got going here! Any plans to release that as a plugin?

Thank you for your floating sidebar plug-in. Its a nice piece of work. I’m having one issue with it though. It views fine on my Mac desktop and laptop but when my client views it on their HP desktops computers and when I view on my iphone, the sidebar only scrolls down far enough so we can see the bottom 200 pixels or so. I don’t see any settings for this and I’ve tried googling for an answer but haven’t found anything so I’m going to the EXPERT! PLEASE ANSWER. It seems like a simple one!
